Annie on My Mind 1982 - (Novel, 233 pages)

Annie On My Mind is a 1982 novel by Nancy Garden about the romantic relationship between two 17-year-old New York City girls, Annie and Liza.

- Liza Winthrop first meets Annie Kenyon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a rainy day. The two become fast friends, although they come from different backgrounds. Liza is the student body president at her private school, Foster Academy, where she is studying hard to get into MIT and become an architect. She lives with her parents and younger brother in the upscale neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights where most of the residents are professionals.
- Annie goes to a public school and lives with her parents — a bookkeeper and a cabdriver — and grandmother in a more disreputable part of Brooklyn. Annie is uncertain if she wants to go to college, and is equally uncertain if she can afford it. She aims to attend the University of California, Berkeley, where she will continue to develop her singing talent. While they have different histories and goals in life, the two girls do share a close friendship that quickly grows into love.
- Liza's school is struggling to remain open and she finds herself having to defend a student who planned a poorly conceived fund-raiser: ear piercing in the school basement. This results in a three-day school suspension for Liza and helps to bring Liza and Annie closer together as they both deal with the struggles encountered by many high school students.
- The suspension and the partly concominant Thanksgiving break give the girls time to become closer and lead to their first kiss. Annie admits she is gay. Liza soon realizes that although she has always considered herself different, she has not realized her sexual orientation until she falls in love with Annie.

I've Heard the Mermaids Singing 1987 - (Drama/Comedy, Canada, 83 Minutes)

"I've Heard the Mermaids Singing" was, when it came out in 1987, by 100 international critics voted one of Canada's ten best films ever (but since then there has been a great many more fine Canadian movies). It was Patricia Rozema's debut as a feature writer/director. It's a bitter-sweet story of Polly who, among other things about her, gets a crush on her female employer Gabrielle. When she finds out about Gabrielle's former lesbian relationship, she gets jealous and rather unhappy but she also manages to cultivate a few seeds within herself into budding flowers.

Plot Summary:

Aoi Nagisa transfers to a new Catholic girls only school and discovers a community of fellow students entwined in an intricate heirarchy, at the top of which sits the all important Etoile. In order to fit in, Nagisa must go to class, join clubs, and make new friends. Meanwhile, Shizuna Hanazono, the Etoile of the school, finds herself drawn to this new, exciting transfer student. As Shizuna and Nagisa get to know eachother, Shizuna finally decides it is time to face her troubled past.

Nagisa Aoi is a first year high school student who has been sent to the Astraea Dormitory after her parents are transferred abroad. The dormitory houses girls from three different girls' schools: St. Spica's Academy, St. Le Rim Girls School and St. Miatre Girls Academy. There she meets the representative of the three girls' schools, Shizuma Hanazano, also know as the Etoile, who is beloved by all students at all schools. The two of them have an interesting first encounter and Hanazano seems to take an instant liking for Aoi.

Rachel goes on several blind dates that misfire badly. She finally lets her mother set her up with Christine, a typical Californian girl. Much to Rachel's chagrin, mom is right! Meanwhile, Rachel's friends wait for her to screw up the relationship. They know, even if she won't admit it, that she still carries a torch for her ex-girlfriend and they're not sure what would happen if she reappeared to reclaim Rachel.

WHAT MAKES A FAMILY 2001 - (Drama, USA, 96 Minutes)

Two gay women have a daughter through artificial insemination. When one of them dies, the parents of the dead partner try to take the child. Based on the true story of Janine Radcliffe.

Janine Nielssen first comes to terms with her own sexuality when she meets Sandy Cataldi, an out-of-the-closet lesbian. They fall in love and exchange marriage vows, although the state of Florida does not legally recognize their union. Sandy becomes pregnant by artificial insemination and gives birth to a daughter, Heather. The couple raise the baby together and lead a happy family life until Sandy is diagnosed with lupus and dies when Heather is only five years old.
A heartbroken Janine is even more devastated when she discovers that Sandy's parents, Evelyn and Frank, to whom she was very close, have successfully gained legal custody of Heather under a state law that gives blood relatives prior claim. Grief-stricken without Sandy, and now separated from her daughter, Janine goes into an emotional collapse. Following her release from a psychiatric hospital, she picks up the pieces of her life with one resolve in mind. Enlisting a leading attorney, Terry Harrison, to fight her case, Janine appeals to the courts one more time to get her daughter back.
